Volunteering

volunteerA Community Response to Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse is a community problem.  It is a criminal offence and a social disease.  People lose their lives, are forced to live with humiliation, degradation and the fear of violence, are controlled and physically, psychologically and emotionally harmed.  We will all know of, live by, work with, go to school or college with, attend a club, group or gym with survivors of domestic abuse.  They are usually very hidden, but 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime.

HOMETRUTHS is enriched by the kindness, generosity, understanding, empathy and the sharing of skills and ideas by the Volunteers who help us improve the lives of survivors of domestic abuse.

Survivors of domestic abuse are isolated and lose any faith or trust they had in others.  A genuine and compassionate response from the local community makes a massive contribution to their recovery and re-engagement with life.

HOMETRUTHS has an application, interview and training process to ensure we recruit the right people.  Volunteers do not need to have experienced domestic abuse themselves.  We CRB check Volunteers and provide regular supervision and support to monitor and develop Volunteers within their roles to ensure an effective, safe and quality service is provided.

Volunteers must be aged 16+.  We welcome people from across Swindon, Wiltshire and surrounding areas to contact us about Volunteering Opportunites within HOMETRUTHS.

Thank you to all the fantastic volunteers who helped out at the HOMETRUTHS Conference 2012.  We had excellent feedback from delegates about the service they had from volunteers on the day:

"I want to thank you and your wonderful volunteers for making the day so informative and a true reminder of why we all do what we do."

"Nothing was too much trouble for the volunteers, they were so friendly and helpful and really made the day an enjoyable experience, thank you!"

"Your volunteers were so welcoming and professional - what a great bunch of people!"
