NewBeginnings Looks to the Future Free From Abuse........

NewBeginnings is a 12 week Personal Development Programme for women who have survived domestic violence and abuse. NewBeginnings was written and developed by HOMETRUTHS after many years of working with women who have experienced domestic abuse and hearing them talk of lost identities and no longer knowing who they are or what they want from life.

Many women never have a chance to find out who they are before becoming involved in abusive relationships from an early age, others have been stripped of their identity and sense of self by domestic abuse.  Domestic abuse erodes women's confidence and self-esteem so they feel worthless, afraid, exhausted and worn down.  Domestic abuse makes women lose their sense of feminity and purpose in life.

When domestic abuse ends the affects of the abuse do not.  Many women are left feeling confused, guilty and responsible for what happened.  To pick up their lives and start again free from the domestic violence can be a very daunting time and lots of women don't know where to begin.

Domestic abuse leaves women feeling isolated from families, friends and the local community and NewBeginnings looks at all aspects of womens lives including: confidence building, developing a sense of identity, building self-esteem, health and well-being and reconnecting with the local community to fulfill their potential; through to assessing what it means to be a woman in modern society and how to access educational and career opportunities.

NewBeginnings was piloted in early 2012 by HOMETRUTHS with funding from the Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation.  The women who attended told us what NewBeginnings had meant to them:

"NewBeginnings has helped me find me again."

"This course has helped me leave behind a destructive past.  I now have the tools to re-build my future for myself and my daughter.  I feel positive, self-aware and now content knowing myself.  I am very enthusiastic about the bright future I know I now have ahead of me, ready for challenges knowing that I have the belief in myself and tools to continuously develop myself."

"When you have been shattered into pieces by domestic abuse, NewBeginnings helps you build a new puzzle from the pieces that are left."

"I feel so much more courageous and feel like I a being re-educated in who I am."

"I am learning how to express myself and that I can, and have got the right to, make choices.  This is so important because after domestic violence you are a diffent person."

"Having completed the Freedom Programme with HOMETRUTHS, I was free but drifting with no direction and no idea what to do or where to go.  NewBeginnings has restored the stuffing in me that I needed to make the decisions to go forward in a confident and assertive way."

Newbeginnings is free to attend.  We welcome referrals from women themselves and professionals can also refer women onto the programme.

Violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. It takes a devastating toll on women’s lives, on their families and on society as a whole. Most societies prohibit such violence – yet the reality is that too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned.
